I’ll spare you the details as to how emotional I got when Francesco, my friend and critically acclaimed Italian chef from my neighborhood bar, Murph’s, offered to help me support those who’ve left us too soon after the tragic and much too painful loss of my lifelong idol, Anthony Bourdain.
I don’t have the time to express my gratitude, or even explain what Anthony Bourdain’s life and work meant to us all (as I’ve already done in the previous post), but I cannot stress how important this night will mean to me and our partnering non-profit, The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Philadelphia Chapter.
For those of you who haven’t seen my posts on social media, we’ll be throwing a fundraiser night for AFSP’s Philadelphia chapter this Monday, June 25th at 6:30 PM until close at Murph’s Bar in Fishtown, 202 E. Girard Ave.
The date marks what would have been Tony’s 62nd birthday and 20% of the night’s kitchen and bar proceeds will be donated to the AFSP as well as any donations any of our guests would be kind enough to donate.
There is no specific time you would need to arrive in order to support the cause, but the special menu will be starting at 6:30 PM and will go until Murph’s closes for the night.
The menu for the night will feature some very special dishes, which I’ll be previewing throughout the week up to the event, inspired by Tony’s life, work, and the countless dishes he’s been known to expose to us over the years. For that alone you should join us because we have some spectacular surprises for you.
If you haven’t already, I encourage you to book your reservation at Murph’s by calling them at (215) 425-1847. At the very least, join us at the bar to have a negroni or two.
On a personal note, it goes without saying that this night is very special for a lot of us, but it is short notice and I’d understand if some of you could not make it. Having said that, I would greatly appreciate if any of my fellow foodie friends with popular blogs and social media accounts would help in spreading the word to their followers. You’ll not only be helping us remember all of those effected by suicide, but you’ll earn my eternal and genuine gratitude.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention focuses on eliminating the loss of life from suicide by: delivering innovative prevention programs, educating the public about risk factors and warning signs, raising funds for suicide research and programs, and reaching out to those individuals who have lost someone to suicide.
The Greater Philadelphia Chapter serves Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties. Their Board Chair, Jan Evans, as well as those who serve on the Philadelphia Board are very active in local communities bringing both education and awareness programs to schools and organizations, in addition to supporting those touched by the tragedy of suicide. Our focus is on AFSP’s National Goal of reducing the suicide rate 20% by the year 2025. Please join their fight and their mission by supporting the Greater Philadelphia Chapter.
